You never know where you’re going to end up

Layne and Peggy Lohmar, married for 40 years, relished trimming trees, mulching flower beds and even raking leaves. “But there comes a time when you have to stop, you know?” Layne said.

He shelved his trowels and snow shovels in 2017, when the couple moved four miles from their home of 40 years to Great Plains by Boulder Creek Neighborhoods.

Great Plains, just around the corner from the tranquil walking trails of Great Plains Park in Aurora, offers a low-maintenance lifestyle complete with Boulder Creek homes crafted with optimum accessibility. Layne said, “You never know where you’re going to end up. We like that the home is totally handicap accessible, with 3-foot-wide doors and wide hallways.”

Boasting a zero-step entry and right-sized designs, the patio homes at Great Plains “look and feel spacious,” Peggy said. “People are amazed when they come in here. The 9-foot ceilings and many windows make it feel very open, and we have a perfect spot for our grand piano not far from the fireplace,” she said. Layne also appreciates the large garage, with room for two cars and a workbench, and Peggy likes the small slope, but not a step, from the garage to the home interior.

“My favorite room in the house has to be the laundry room,” Peggy said with a chuckle. “Our last home had the laundry in the basement, and I had to go up and down the stairs. Here it’s a few steps away, and we were able to put up a lot of shelving.” Storage abounds throughout the home, with an expansive walk-in closet and a master bedroom featuring double sinks and an accessible shower. “I also love the kitchen,” Peggy said. “It’s very open, and traffic can move right through it when we have family here.” Layne continued, “The homes are very quiet, very well insulated. We’re near Buckley Airforce but never have noise.”

After Peggy and Layne retired, they hopped into their lifelong hobby: golf. “We can spend the day at Murphy Creek, just momma and me,” Layne said. “Golf is our main thing – instead of being home taking care of a yard.” When not golfing, “we’re usually on our patio,” Peggy said. “We love the weather here, all the sun.” Layne and Peggy say Great Plains community keep them happy and busy.

The HOA maintains an outdoor swimming pool and clubhouse with an exercise room. “We enjoy life here and the variety of ages and diverse neighborhood,” Peggy said. “It’s a very active and social group.” Layne added, “Janet and Connie in sales make the place. They understand the group and are true professionals.”
