Low-maintenance living was as captivating as Riverdale Ranch’s peaceful atmosphere

For Senga and Ken Friend, the charm of the countryside mingled with low-maintenance living at a reasonable price couldn’t be resisted. In July, the Friends moved into a paired patio home at Boulder Creek Neighborhoods’ Riverdale Ranch in northeast Thornton and soon were sauntering the local trails and savoring the “big sky views” from their back patio, said Ken, a retired mail carrier. “The country atmosphere is our favorite part,” he continued. “I go out for a walk in the evenings, and it’s country quiet, as quiet as can be, though we still have everything we need close by.”
Boulder Creek’s commitment to low-maintenance living was as captivating as Riverdale Ranch’s peaceful atmosphere when the Friends purchased the first home sold in the neighborhood. “We had a half-acre mature yard with a large barn. It required an awful lot of work,” Ken said. “I wanted my wife to be settled no matter what happened.” While Ken admitted he was reluctant to leave their labor-intensive property in Lakewood, Boulder Creek’s signature style of low-maintenance living was more than enough to change his mind. Indeed, the Riverdale Ranch Lifestyle Association manages a handful of exterior maintenance chores – exterior home painting, shoveling snow, pulling weeds, and mowing the lawn, to name a few.
Riverdale Ranch sales manager Drew Kell echoed Ken: “The number one selling proposition that brings people our way, like the Friends, is the lower-maintenance lifestyle.” And while many of the exterior maintenance chores are managed on behalf of the homebuyer, Boulder Creek has thought of interior details as well… things like four-foot-wide hallways, raised electrical plugs to reduce bending, and home series focused on main-floor living – minimizing stairs, and steps.
The Friends were also won over by their roomy yet cozy floorplan, the Zenith paired patio home from Boulder Creek’s Opportunities II series. “We bought blind, seeing the floorplan on paper, but we liked the layout from the beginning,” Ken said. “Senga has so much space in the kitchen, and I plan to put up shelves in the two-car garage, where there is lots of room for storage.”
Indeed, the single-story Zenith floorplan efficiently uses its 1,265 square feet: The great room includes a dining area, and sliding glass doors open to the back patio. Ken appreciates how the afternoon light from the expansive windows illuminates the couple’s art collection, and Senga, a passionate decorator, enjoyed selecting the flooring and finishes via Boulder Creek’s design process.
“We like that the master bedroom is at the back end of our house, and the laundry room is at the front,” Ken continued. “It’s perfect for us to walk back and forth and gives us exercise.” The extra bedroom is a great spot for Ken’s books and mementos. Married for 31 years, the Friends “had stored a lot of boxes in our barn, so it was a process, but a good one, to go through it all,” Ken said. The Zenith floorplan is built on a crawl space, though other Opportunities’ plans feature a walk-out basement with an option to finish the area.
“We have everything we need,” Ken said. “We’ve never lived in new a house before, and the quality of the workmanship is impressive. Our sales manager, Drew Kell, has been really helpful and has done everything to make things go well in light of COVID.” The walk-through was meticulously distanced, and the Friends’ were able to sign their closing documents remotely.
“We are happy here,” Ken said. Senga regularly visits the nearby roadside markets, and the surrounding farms and generous open space enhance Riverdale Ranch’s country-style serenity. A bridge from Riverdale Ranch connects to hiking and biking paths, and Thornton’s new Active Adult Recreation Center and the Riverdale Golf Course are minutes from the Friends’ front door. Restaurants, medical offices and even the airport are likewise easily accessible from the idyllic and convenient enclave.
